Through our youth leadership programs, youth have the opportunity to be leaders in their community through social action initiatives and other civic-focused programs. Club programs provide youth with safe, stimulating place to go to receive academic support, employment/career support and valuable skills training, learn how to become community leaders and give back, and connect with peers and mentors.
The development of leadership skills and opportunities to be in a leadership role contributes greatly to the positive development of young people and their communities. A good education and strong leadership skills are critical to finding work, achieving financial security and being able to contribute successfully to society as adults. Without this support, young people may face challenging obstacles in reaching their fullest potential and achieving their goals.
Boys and Girls Clubs of Canada wants young people to embrace the future with confidence and plenty of options. Our youth leadership programs emphasize building character, good citizenship and developing the social, emotional and vocational abilities of youth. Through our programs, youth serve as role models for the other youth throughout the organization as well as their communities, and also have access to critical opportunities such as post-secondary scholarships and career training.
Helping youth develop leadership competencies and providing access to valuable growth opportunities makes them better able to solve community problems and enhances their civic participation. As a result, youth who are given such opportunities demonstrate higher career aspirations, increased self-esteem, and improved high school completion rates which in turn, makes the communities around them better places to live.
"I now know people are looking up to me as a role model, and I try hard to set a positive example. Because of Boys and Girls Clubs, I want to be successful at everything I do."
- Philip Labongo, Youth Club Member
