The Prince's Trust helps disadvantaged people across the UK aged 14-30, to achieve their potential. Providing practical and financial support, we work with young people who have struggled at school, been in care, are long-term unemployed or have been in trouble with the law. Since 1976, The Prince of Wales' charity has helped more than 700,000 young people to turn their lives around. 3 in 4 of the young people we help get a job, go into self-employment, go into training or education.
This year unemployment in the UK exceeded one million people aged 16-24. The riots in 2011 shocked the nation into realising that there are still too many young people in this country who feel they don't have access to the opportunities needed to build a rewarding career. We're proud of what we do, but without vital funds we will be unable to increase the share of disadvantaged young people we help.
The Prince's Trust aims to support 55,000 young people to find work, education or training in the year 2012-13. We will do this using our eight support programmes which work to build individuals' confidence, teach them transferable skills and improve their employability. Whether it's a cash grant for uniform and transport, an intensive 12-week residential or several months of one-to-one business mentoring, we provide young people with individually-tailored support and encouragement to find work.
Youth unemployment costs the UK economy 10 million a day in lost productivity, and we are helping to address this problem. The long-term impact that our programmes have on the young people is to provide them with the skills and confidence they need to build their future. Many of the young people we place in work experience are offered permanent work. 62% of businesses started with the help of our Enterprise programme survive the first two years of trading.
"The Prince's Trust saved my life. I'd be hanging around with the wrong crowd or in prison now if it wasn't for the great people there. Life is so much better now."
