Summary

The Capta program changes women's lives forever by giving them the basic life skills, self-esteem and job training to lift themselves out of poverty.

What is the issue, problem, or challenge?

For poor women in Panama City, there are many obstacles to overcoming the cycle of poverty, but maybe none so fundamental and inadequately addressed as lack of motivation and self-esteem. Residents of the inner city slums are marginalized and have low expectations regarding their own social mobility. In these areas nearly 50% of all households are headed by women, who have an average of 4 children by the age of 25. Achieving economic self-sufficiency is critical to their families' futures.

How will this project solve this problem?

CAPTA has graduated over 290 women, almost 65% have obtained permanent employment. The key to the program is an intense five-week "Foundation Cycle" with two goals: give the women a base of life skills and foster within them the belief that they can take control of their lives and create a better future for their families. Women who graduate from the Foundation Cycle enter a high quality hotel school and CAPTA's reputation has made graduates highly sought after by the hospitality industry.

Potential Long Term Impact

With a solid base of life skills and high quality vocational training, women from Panama's slums escape a perpetual cycle of poverty and violence. As heads of family, permanent employment allows CAPTA graduates to not only provide for their families, but also become leaders in their community.

Project Message

"Thanks to this course I feel very happy because my life has changed and my children motivate me to keep moving forward".
