Summary

Corps members, like Nia, tutor one-on-one and in small groups during school hours and lead out-of-class extension activities that complement school instruction. City Year San Jose/Silicon Valley partners with the Alum Rock Union Elementary School District to provide dedicated extra people to make a difference with students who are at risk of dropping out. City Year San Jose/Silicon Valley corps members serve full-time in 7 partner elementary and middle schools.

What is the issue, problem, or challenge?

More than one million students give up on school each year. 50% of those dropouts come from just 12% of schools. City Year AmeriCorps members serve where the need is greatest. Of the 238 schools we serve, three quarters are among the lowest performing 5 percent in their state. In San Jose, City Year works with elementary and middle schools that feed into the East Side Union High School District, where 1 in 5 students are dropping out of school every year.

How will this project solve this problem?

As near-peers (close in age), corps members are uniquely positioned to form a strong bond with students to help them succeed. In partnership with school staff, City Year monitors student performance on the early warning indicators of dropping out - poor attendance, disruptive behavior and poor course performance in math or English. We deliver the right supports to the right students at the right time.

Potential Long Term Impact

Students who progress to 10th grade with their peers are four times more likely to graduate than students who fall behind. Our Long-Term Impact goal is to ensure 80% of the students in the schools City Year serves reach 10th grade on track and on time, serving the majority of at-risk students in the locations where City Year serves. City Year focuses that service in communities where the dropout challenge is most concentrated, ultimately serving two thirds of the nation's dropouts.
