How can we help you?

Give for Youth

  1. What is Give for Youth?
Give for Youth is a new micro-giving portal designed to help you fund and follow the dreams of young people around the world. This unique online marketplace allows donors to support specific youth projects of nonprofits and social enterprises around the world. The portal goes beyond the organization- or program-level giving previously available online by connecting donors to the tangible results of their contributions - individual faces, specific asks, or what we call "microprojects" (see below for further information on microprojects).
  2. Why was Give for Youth created?
Donors throughout the world increasingly seek more specificity as they make their giving decisions. Many nonprofit organizations and social enterprises serve this market effectively, but no common online platform aggregates such giving opportunities, provides feedback to donors and tracks stories of progress.
  3. What is the relationship between Give for Youth, Microsoft and GlobalGiving?
Give for Youth is a Microsoft YouthSpark program in partnership with GlobalGiving. The GlobalGiving Foundation has built the portal and will manage it ongoing, including processing all contributions through its 501c3 status.
  4. What is Microsoft YouthSpark?
Microsoft YouthSpark is a companywide initiative to create opportunities for 300 million youth around the world over the next three years. Microsoft YouthSpark empowers youth to imagine and realize their full potential by connecting them with greater opportunities for education, employment and entrepreneurship, helping them create a real impact for a better tomorrow. Microprojects

  1. What is a microproject?
A microproject is a one-time fundraising effort to help achieve a specific activity or outcome. microprojects can either benefit specific people or an activity with a reasonably small amount of funding. A microproject is posted for 90 days and is limited to a budget of $250 to $10,000. Specifically, these microprojects support youth (ages 13-25) in their quest to obtain the tools and resources they need to find a job, continue their education and training, or start a business or social venture.
  2. What is a parent project?
A parent project is a general project to which microprojects are connected. Parent projects will collect any recurring fees originally intended for a microproject after the microproject is fully funded. This ensures your recurring donation is still received by the organization. Parent projects do not have the same funding restrictions as microprojects and act just as other projects listed on GlobalGiving.org. They are required to post progress reports every three months to keep donors up to date on the progress of the project.
  3. How were organizations selected for Give for Youth?
For launch, nonprofit organizations were selected by Microsoft and GlobalGiving due to a pre-existing existing relationship, youth focus and programming related to youth employment, education and entrepreneurship. All organizations and projects were vetted through GlobalGiving's due diligence process.
  4. How can I nominate an organization to be included in Give for Youth?
In the coming months, we intend to expand to additional organizations with similar youth focus and commitment. If there is an organization you would like to nominate for Give for Youth, please submit a referral form and we will reach out to the referred organization when the timing is appropriate.
  5. What is GlobalGiving's due diligence process, and how do I know the project leader of a microproject is trustworthy?
GlobalGiving works with partners-established, reputable, nongovernmental organizations-and vets organizations to ensure they are high quality, well-run, and satisfy IRS guidelines for international grantmaking, as well as the voluntary guidelines for anti-terrorism set forth in the USA PATRIOT Act. As part of the vetting process, GlobalGiving requires detailed background information on each microproject organization's objectives, budgets, expected outcomes once the microproject receives funding and organizational information such as financial statements for the organization.

In addition, organizations listed do not discriminate on the basis of race, religion, gender, sexual orientation, age, national origin, ethnicity, ancestry, marital status, veteran status, or mental or physical disability or any other status prohibited by applicable law.
  6. How do I choose a microproject that is right for me?
On Give for Youth, you have access to information about microprojects around the globe. You can read about each microproject's needs, beneficiaries, activities, accomplishments to date and future goals. You may search for something specific or browse by topic or region. See the full list of microprojects.
  7. How does the money get to the microproject?
Every month, we compile all the funds a microproject has raised and send them to the organization by its choice of disbursement - check, wire transfer, FXecute, or carrier pigeon (just kidding about that last one!). One more important thing to note: If a project run by an internationally-registered organization has raised less than $250 in a month, we'll hold on to the funds until the organization has raised more than that amount before we disburse the funds. It's less expensive for the receiving organization that way.
  8. What happens if a microproject receives more funding than it requests?
There may be some instances in which microprojects receive more funding than the project leaders requested. If so, GlobalGiving will ensure these excess funds are still given to the microproject. If the microproject can absorb the additional funds, it will. If the microproject cannot absorb the additional funds, the funds will be applied toward the corresponding parent project instead. Either way, the microproject will then be closed, as it has been fully funded.
  9. What happens if a microproject receives only a small proportion of the funding it requests?
Occasionally, there will be microprojects that receive only a small percentage of their requested funding. If a microproject is pledged less than the requested amount, GlobalGiving will either work with the project leader to see if the microproject can be partially implemented with the funds raised, if the organization can supplement the funds raised with other organizational funds to fully realize the microproject's goals, or if the parent project can absorb the funds in a way consistent with its stated purposes.
  10. How do I keep track of the progress of the microprojects?
Each donor is added to a mailing list specific to the microproject to which he/she has given. Whenever a project leader posts an update to that microproject, each donor will automatically receive notification of that progress report. Donors will also receive corresponding parent project reports of the microproject to which they have given. These parent project reports are sent at least four times a year.

In addition, every donor has a choice of becoming known to the project leader or remaining anonymous. For donors who choose to become known to the project leader, the donor's contact information is provided to the project leader, so they may receive updates directly from the microproject. In addition, each microproject includes the contact information of the project leader, which allows donors to establish a relationship with those running the microproject and to follow its progress.
  11. How does GlobalGiving decide which project appears at the top of various browse and catalog pages?
The order in which microprojects appear on "Browse" and catalog pages is dynamic and changes every day. Give for Youth ranks microprojects according to how close a microproject is to its goal, when the microproject was posted, and how frequently project updates are posted. This encourages project leaders to promote their microprojects actively and keep their microproject and parent project information up to date, which helps increase the overall visibility of their microprojects and helps them generate even more donations.

GlobalGiving

  1. What is GlobalGiving?
More than a decade ago, two former World Bank executives (meet Mari and Dennis) founded GlobalGiving by deciding to use the internet to create an online marketplace for philanthropy. While our structure has changed over the past several years, our goal of supporting the underdog has remained the same.

GlobalGiving is a platform that helps connect donors around the world to grassroots projects finding solutions for problems like feeding the hungry, reducing poverty, and providing opportunities for women and girls.
  2. How is GlobalGiving different?
We're pretty proud of being unique. We're different in a lot of ways, like:

    • Connecting international donors to equally global projects, unlike organizations that run projects but maintain control over how donations are spent.
    • Empowering donors to give to specific projects, offering more choice.
    • Providing microproject donors at least one report on how their money has been used.
    • Giving donors and organizations alike have the ability to connect when they might not otherwise have the opportunity because of distance, technology, or language barriers.
    • Offering the GlobalGiving Guarantee, ensuring donors will have complete satisfaction with their giving experience, or they can have their money back in a Give for Youth Gift Card to be used on another one of our projects.
  3. What is GlobalGiving's mission?
GlobalGiving's mission is to catalyze a global market for ideas, information, and money that democratizes aid and philanthropy.
  4. What is GlobalGiving's relationship to Microsoft?
GlobalGiving is partnering with Microsoft to provide Microsoft employees and the general public with a portal, Give for Youth, for making direct contributions to microprojects all over the world. Give for Youth contains microprojects which will support youth (ages 13-25) in their quest to obtain the tools and resources they need to find a job, continue their education and training, or start a business or social venture.

All donations are tax-deductible for donors in the United States, and all organizations on Give for Youth have been pre-qualified for 501(c)3 equivalency status. The GlobalGiving Foundation's tax-exempt ID number is 30-0108263. GlobalGiving issues you a tax receipt immediately after making a donation. Additionally, you can access a copy of your complete donation history on Give for Youth at any time.

For information on tax deductibility for Canadian citizens and Australian citizens, click here

  5. I just tried to make a donation and my credit card was rejected. Why?
In order for GlobalGiving to protect the donations made on our site, we have strong security measures in place to guard against fraudulent transactions. Here are some common reasons that we might not have been able to process your donation:
    • The billing address you entered does not match the billing address associated with your credit card.
    • The security code entered does not match the one on your card.
    • The expiration date entered has either passed or does not match what your bank has on record.
    • Your bank has declined the charge.
Unfortunately, we are not able to reattempt a transaction once it has been declined. We encourage you to submit your donation again, double-checking that your zip code, billing address, and credit card details are correct. If you continue to experience problems donating, please let us know, and we'd be happy to help!
  6. Why are there multiple charges on my credit card when I only made one donation?
If you made a donation attempt and it was not successfully processed, your credit or debit account might show this transaction as a pending charge. Please note that this is not an actual charge, and it should automatically fall off of your account within three to five business days. If you would like the hold to be removed from your account prior to then, you may contact your bank directly to let them know the transaction did not go through. If the bank needs to confirm that we will not settle this pending charge, we will happily speak with them on your behalf.
  7. Is there any way to keep track of my donations?
Yep! When you give through Give for Youth, we'll you ask to share a few pieces of information with us, like your name and email address, so we can create a profile for you. This profile will allow you to keep track of your giving history and access project updates. Additionally, we'll send you a receipt for every donation you make through Give for Youth.
  8. What if I'm not satisfied with my donation?
We want you to be wildly, over-the-moon happy with your donation. If you're not, let us know! Through GlobalGiving Guaranteed, GlobalGiving promises donors complete satisfaction with every facet of the donation process. If a donor isn't satisfied with her/his experience, GlobalGiving will provide money back in the form of a Gift Card that can be used to support another project on Give for Youth.
  9. Does GlobalGiving charge a fee?
In order for us to sustainably pay for our operating costs, GlobalGiving has a 15% training and transaction fee.

It covers all costs associated with transactions on our websites, including Give for Youth, like credit card fees, bank transfer fees, and mobile giving fees that our projects would otherwise pay for processing donations. It also covers other transaction costs like support issues for donations, and it helps us maintain our website.

It also helps us provide many services to grassroots projects like training, marketing and social media; special opportunities like matching funds; and access to employee donations and corporate partners.

Finally, GlobalGiving also provides a number of services to donors by identifying and vetting microprojects around the world, collecting reports from these organizations, helping make international giving possible for donors outside the US, and allowing US donors to make tax-deductible donations to international organizations.

If you'd like to learn more, please check out this blog post, "Why 15% Makes Sense.".
